129th Rescue Wing Successfully Transport Sick Cruise Ship Passenger

The California Air National Guardsmen stationed at Moffett Field extract passenger off San Diego coast.

A passenger on a Norwegian cruise ship is currently in a San Diego hospital thanks to the help of the 129th Rescue Wing.

The unit stationed at Moffett Field was called into action late Saturday by the U.S. Coast Guard who needed assistance moving the injured passenger—who suffered kidney failure—off the ship located more than 300 miles of the San Diego Coast.

The 129th Rescue Wing completed the water mission Sunday afternoon, according to a California Air National Guard spokesman. The 129th used a HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopter and a MC-130P Combat Shadow refueling airplane for this task.

"This was a complex rescue mission and our Airmen rose to the occasion," said Col. Steven Butow, 129th RQW commander.  "I could not be prouder of our Airmen’s efforts to save this passenger."

This is the 993rd person the wing is credited with saving.
